A company can open an office, appoint a country manager, sign a distributor or announce a new partnership — and technically say it has entered a market.
But presence is not traction.
Building a market starts with different questions. Where is the real opportunity? Which customers should we focus on first? What does the local ecosystem actually look like? Which partners can create access, credibility and scale? And what needs to happen after the strategy deck is finished?
Over the years, working across different countries, technologies and partner ecosystems, I have learned that successful market expansion rarely follows a perfectly straight line.
Markets have their own dynamics. Partners have their own motivations. Customers have their own buying behaviour. And strategies that work beautifully in one country may need to be reconsidered in another.
This is why I see market expansion as a connected journey: understand the market; define the opportunity; build the right ecosystem; create traction; learn, adapt and scale.
The objective is not simply to be present in another market.
The objective is to build a business that belongs there.
That distinction matters. And it is one of the areas where BMS Advisory helps turn complexity into growth.
