A partner ecosystem can look impressive on a slide. Dozens — sometimes hundreds — of logos. Technology partners. Resellers. Integrators. Distributors. Alliances. But the number of partners says surprisingly little about the strength of an ecosystem.
A signed agreement is not a partnership. Neither is a portal login, a certification or an annual partner meeting.
The real question is much simpler: are we creating business together?
Strong partnerships need a reason to exist. There has to be value for the customer, value for the partner and value for the company — and those three things need to meet somewhere in the middle.
That means understanding what motivates a partner. Where the opportunity is. What each side brings to the table. Who owns what. And, most importantly, what happens after everyone has signed the agreement and taken the photograph.
Over the years, working with partner ecosystems of very different sizes and across different markets, I have seen both sides. Small partnerships that created remarkable business. And impressive partner programmes with hundreds of names — but surprisingly little happening behind the logos.
The difference is activation.
The right partners. The right opportunity. Mutual commitment. Clear execution. And enough trust to build something neither side could build alone.
Because a successful ecosystem is not measured by how many logos fit on a slide.
It is measured by what those partners can achieve together.
That is where partnerships become business. And where ecosystems become a real engine for growth.
