Perspective 06 · Trust in practice

Trust is built in the moments that matter.

It is easy to talk about trust when everyone agrees, the plan is on track and the opportunity looks promising.

The real test comes when something changes.

A commitment becomes difficult to keep. A partner sees the opportunity differently. A customer asks a question we cannot yet answer.

What happens next matters more than another presentation about shared values.

  • Do we raise the concern early?
  • Do we clarify what we can deliver?
  • Do we take responsibility for the next step?
  • And do we listen carefully enough to understand what is at stake for the other side?

In international business, these moments become even more important.

We work across different markets, cultures, expectations and ways of making decisions. The same words do not always carry the same meaning. A polite yes does not always mean a shared commitment.

Trust needs more than good intentions. It needs shared understanding and dependable action.

For me, that means:

  • listening before proposing
  • making expectations explicit
  • keeping commitments visible
  • speaking honestly when circumstances change
  • recognising that the other side also has something at risk

When a deadline slips, an early conversation about the impact and the recovery plan gives people something concrete to work with. Silence leaves them guessing.

This is why I see trust as part of how business is built, every day.

It gives people a reason to share difficult information, challenge assumptions and stay engaged when the easy answers disappear.

Confidence grows when actions match words.
