Belonging Can Have More Than One Home

· Beata Monika Schäfer

Where do you belong?

It sounds like a simple question until your life has unfolded across different places, languages and communities.

I do not experience belonging as one address that cancels out every other one. There are places connected with my beginnings, places where I have built a life, and people who make a new place feel familiar.

Each can hold a different part of who I am.

The same is true of the worlds we enter beyond work. Diving and gliding are two personal interests that remind me how different a perspective can become. One draws my attention beneath the surface; the other towards space, air and distance.

Neither replaces everyday life. They make room for other ways of experiencing it.

Belonging grows through participation: learning how people communicate, noticing what they value, returning, contributing, and allowing a place to change us. We can remain connected to our roots without expecting every new community to feel exactly like the one we left.

In international business, this matters. A market is not simply a location to enter. It is a setting in which people already have relationships, habits and expectations. Building something meaningful there requires attention and respect, not only a translated message.

Having more than one home can teach us to be curious about those differences. It can also make us more considerate towards someone who is still finding their place.

We do not need to reduce our lives to one origin, one role or one landscape.

Belonging can have more than one home.

I build trust before I build business.
